The Salty Deck and Newport News Park Adventure
Ahoy, me hearties! Gather ’round and prepare to hear the latest tale of the Putt Pirates as we set sail on the greens of Newport News Park. With a mix of short odd holes and long even holes, and the introduction of a new card game, Salty Deck, this voyage was one for the history books.
The Crew and Their Stations
The brave souls present for this journey were:
- Ship Captain Patrick McCormick: Steady leader of our crew.
- Quartermaster Jasper Gutierrez: Ready to seize the top spot with his piratical glint.
- Boatswain Stefanie Bonsky: Arriving late due to a late medic call but always reliable.
- Gunner Shelly Jackson: Known for his precision with the discs.
- Cook Mike Mui: His skills steadily improving, adding spice to our round.
Absent from our ranks were:
- Sailing Master Tommy Brosam: Tending to his green pastures.
- Derek Gundersen: Missing in action.
- Surgeon Matt Payne: Tending to his daughter’s nasty splinter. His medical duties have got him thinking: “Never be good at something you don’t want to do…”
- Seamen Trevor Elam: AWOL, lost in the foggy seas.
- Master-at-arms Ernest Huizar: On duty at work.
- Helms-woman Megan Gilmore: Also on duty at work.
A Sleepy Start
With Stefanie arriving late, the rest of the crew warmed up on holes 9-12. During this time, Shelly Jackson amazed us with a stunning 30-foot putt, setting the tone for the day. “I reckon me arm’s got a bit of magic in it today!” Shelly exclaimed.

A Pre-Round Putting Competition
Before the main event, we had a putting competition for a prize disc:
- Ship Captain McCormick: The first out, struggling at 10 feet. “I hate putting, so I just try to get it close on my first or second shot,” he grumbled.
- Boatswain Stefanie Bonsky: Missed at 15 feet. “Must be the lack of sleep catchin’ up to me,” she yawned.
- Cook Mike Mui: Knocked out soon after. “I swear the basket’s movin’ on me!” he muttered.
- Quartermaster Jasper Gutierrez and Gunner Shelly Jackson: Battled neck and neck at 20 feet, with Shelly finally sinking the winning putt to claim his second prize disc. “Two in a row! I’m startin’ to think I got a knack for this,” Shelly grinned.
The Salty Deck
Before teeing off, we decided to spice things up with the Salty Deck, a card game designed by Ship Captain McCormick and Boatswain Bonsky. The game involved handing out cards for various disc golf infractions and achievements, adding a playful twist to our round.

The Game Begins
As we teed off, the cards started flying:
- Cook Mike Mui to Gunner Shelly Jackson: First card exchange, falsely claiming Shelly’s drive didn’t go 50 feet, which was promptly given back as Shelly’s drive clearly went much farther. “You can’t trick a trickster!” Shelly laughed. The ‘no lying’ card was promptly also haded to Mui as he learned to hold his cards a tad tighter.
Quickly, Shelly and Mui accumulated cards as they struggled on the first few holes. “Looks like I’m the salty dog today,” Mui sighed.
“Looks like I’m the salty dog today.”
– Mike Mui
Despite the antics, everyone played fantastic today. Most notable was Mui’s skill, improving with longer putts and drives, and remarkably, not hitting a single other player. “Guess me wild days are behind me,” Mui chuckled.
Mid-Round Departures
Mui had to leave after hole 9, bringing an end to the card game. Quartermaster Jasper had no cards, making him the winner, but he stepped aside since he had already won a PP-Mini. The next contenders were Stefanie and Patrick with one card each, and Stefanie was declared the winner of the PP-Mini as Patrick graciously stepped down. “I make the PP-Minis, so I don’t need to win one,” McCormick said with a wink.
After hole 11, Ship Captain McCormick realized he had forgotten a massage appointment and had to leave, forfeiting his lead for the number one bag tag. Just like the captain of a ship to leave the boat for some pamperin’ while the crew is left to do all the work!
The Final Stretch
With the captain gone, the crew pressed on. Quartermaster Jasper Gutierrez emerged victorious for the round, with Boatswain Stefanie Bonsky coming in second. Despite some impressive shots, Shelly Jackson and Mike Mui left the round with sunken heads. “Guess it wasn’t my day after all,” Shelly shrugged. “Next time, the treasure will be mine!” Mui declared.
The Tale’s End
‘Twas a day of fierce competition, laughter, and playful jabs. The introduction of the Salty Deck brought a new layer of fun and mischief to our game, keeping everyone on their toes. As we look forward to our next adventure, may our discs fly true, our spirits remain high, and may we all avoid the dreaded salty cards!
Fair winds and following seas, me hearties! Until next time, keep yer eyes on the prize and yer hands on the discs!
